Monsoon rains, floods killed 2155 across India 2019

New Delhi: In the monsoon, floods in many parts of the country killed 2155 people and 45 people went missing this year. Home Ministry officials said on Friday that more than 26 lakh people were affected by heavy rains in 22 states of the country. The highest number of 430 deaths occurred in Maharashtra, while 227 died in West Bengal.

The 361 districts of the country faced rain-related problems. Around 2.23 lakh houses across the country were completely damaged while 2.06 lakh houses were partially damaged by the rain. Crops planted in 14.09 lakh hectares were also destroyed. However, this year's monsoon officially ended on September 30, but rains are still continuing in some states of the country.

Highest rainfall since 1994

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), during the four-month monsoon period, this year has received the highest rainfall since 1994. 22 districts of Maharashtra were affected by the floods. In these districts, 398 people were injured in rain-related accidents while 7.19 lakh people had to leave home and take shelter in another place.

166 deaths due to floods and rains in Bihar

In 22 districts of West Bengal, rain caused trouble. Here 37 people were injured while four went missing. 280 relief camps were set up in West Bengal for the rain affected people. 43,444 people took shelter in these camps. The floods also devastated Bihar, where 166 people died. A total of 282 relief camps were set up in the 28 states of Bihar during the monsoon, where 1.96 lakh people took shelter.

189 deaths in Madhya Pradesh due to rain

Due to rain, 189 people have died in Madhya Pradesh this year. 39 people were injured and 7 people went missing. 98 relief centers were constructed in 38 districts of Madhya Pradesh for flood and rain affected people. 32,996 people took shelter at these relief centers. Rains in Kerala killed 181 people and injured 72 people. 2,227 relief centers were set up by the Government of Kerala for the rain-affected people across the state, in which 4.46 lakh people took shelter.
